SportsScope : Loyola Women’s Cagers Face Toughest Test in Hawaii : Loyola’s Undefeated Women Cagers Will Face Toughest Test in Hawaii Tourney

The Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team, off to its best start ever at 3-0, will face its toughest test in the University of Hawaii Tournament starting tonight in Honolulu. The Lions will open against Stanford while Hawaii faces Arkansas. The consolation and championship games will be played Saturday.

The Lions have been led by freshman guards Kristen Bruich, averaging 17 points, and Lynn Flanagan, averaging 13.3. Senior forward Amy Atkinson is averaging 9.7 points and 8.7 rebounds. Bruich scored 27 points last week against Nevada-Reno and had 18 against Southern California College to earn West Coast Athletic Conference player of the week honors. Flanagan scored 14 in each of the Lions’ first two games and had a team-high 12 against St. Thomas of Minnesota.

The fifth-ranked UCLA women’s volleyball team will play host to No. 19 UC Berkeley at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the John Wooden Center in a first-round NCAA Tournament match. The Bruins, 27-9, will be making their 18th straight postseason appearance. Cal, 18-14, has lost to UCLA in three matches this season. The match-up includes former Mira Costa High stars Wendy Fletcher for the Bruins and freshmen Lisa Arce and Holly McPeak for the Bears. The winner will meet the victor of Saturday’s Pepperdine-Brigham Young match.

Registration is being taken for boys and girls basketball leagues at all Gardena city parks and Primm Memorial Gymnasium, 1651 West 162nd St. Boys leagues, with a $10 fee, are in five age divisions ranging from children born in 1978 and ’79 to those born in 1969 through ’71. Girls leagues, with a $6 fee, are offered by grades, ranging from second- and third-graders to a senior league for high school-age players.
