American Motorcyclists Grab Singapore Prizes

American riders Wayne Rainey and John Kocinski, both riding Yamaha YZR500s, swept the top two places in the Grand Prix for Motorcycles on Malaysia’s Johore Circuit Sunday.

Rainey completed the race in 16 minutes, 56.1 seconds, winning first prize money of $1,400, while Lucky Strike-Roberts teammate Kocinski was second in 16:58.3.

Local rider Tan Seng Kooi, who failed to complete Saturday’s race in the two-day Lucky Strike GP because of mechanical problems, finished third in 17:01.5 on a Honda RS500.

Singapore ace Fabian Looi led for the first two laps on his Yamaha YZR500 but finished fourth, followed by 1987 European champion Manfred Fischer of West Germany.

The scheduled 15-lap race was cut to 13 laps because of heavy rain.
