CS Fullerton Tries for Its Second Win Against New Orleans

Share

Just two nights after its first victory of the season, Cal State Fullerton will play the University of New Orleans tonight. The Privateers have much of the cast that went 26-4 last year and made it to the second round of the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. tournament.

Fullerton, which lost to Montana and Weber State, Big Sky Conference teams, in its first two games, easily beat winless Portland, 85-66, Thursday night, despite playing without Henry Turner. Turner, a swingman who was last season’s second-leading scorer, tore ligaments in his foot in a game last week and will be out for at least another week.

Richard Morton, last season’s leading scorer, is averaging 26 points, and guard Eugene Jackson had a career-high 20-point performance against Portland.

Ledell Eackles and Sam Jones, both forwards who are averaging more than 20 points a game, have led New Orleans, which has beaten McNeese State but lost to Bradley.

The biggest difference between this Privateer team and last season’s is the absence of coach Benny Dees, now at Wyoming. Art Tolis, an assistant under Dees, is the new coach.
