Golf Roundup : Hulbert, Tway Hold On for Team Title

Mike Hulbert and Bob Tway won the $600,00 Chrysler PGA team championship by a stroke Sunday in a tense ending at the Palm Beach Polo and Country Club in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Starting the day five strokes ahead, they had trouble putting and were almost caught by Fred Couples and Mike Donald, who had a 10-under par 62 over the 7,050-yard South Course.

Hulbert and Tway, who missed the cut two years ago and lost by a stroke to Gary Hallberg and Scott Hoch last year, collected the $100,000 first prize with their 72-hole total of 250, 38 under par.

But Colbert and Donald, who were tied five strokes back with the defending champions when the day’s round started, produced six pars and an eagle by Donald at the 532-yard, par-5 12th hole to close the gap.

With one hole left, they were 37 under, a stroke behind Hulbert-Tway.

“We were both short of the green at the 18th,” Donald said. “And then we both overshot the hole. We were lucky to get a par.”

Tway was disappointed about his final round.

“We didn’t play as well as we did the first two days,” Tway said. “It’s tough keeping up the pace. We even had our first bogey in two years, and we didn’t get a birdie after the 13th hole.”

Orville Moody shot a five-under-par 67 to beat out former San Francisco 49er quarterback John Brodie by three strokes and win the rain-shortened Kaanapali Senior Classic at Kaanapali, Hawaii.

The final round was delayed for 2 1/2 hours by rain after Saturday’s second round was rained out, turning the 54-hole tournament into a 36-hole event.

Moody earned $45,000 for his third tour victory of 1987, placing him fourth on the money list at $355,793. Moody had a two-round total of 12-under-par 132.

Brodie made $26,000 after carding a 67 for a two-round total of 135.

Moody’s opening round of 65 tied the Royal Kaanapali North Course record set by Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus in 1964, but Bruce Devlin broke the record with a 63 in the final round to finish in fifth place at 138.
