A 23-year-old South-Central Los Angeles man was in critical condition at California Hospital late Monday after being shot by a Los Angeles police officer who said he thought the man had pulled a gun on him after a lengthy chase.

Robert Warren, 23, was shot in the back by Officer Mitchell Grace, 25, after Warren fled from Grace and his partner, John Berdin, 33, police said. The officers had been investigating an East 55th Street residence outside which authorities say numerous drug transactions take place.

According to Lt. William Hall, Grace said that he shot Warren after the suspect, who was perched on a wall, reached into his waistband, pulled out what Grace believed to be a small-caliber gun and began to turn around.

In a later search, officers in a helicopter discovered a toy gun on the roof of a nearby house. Following the shooting, Warren, who was ordered held on possible parole violations, was found hiding under a mattress in a nearby yard by the officers.
