Local News in Brief : Inmate Walks Out of Jail

Share

A County Jail inmate who somehow obtained civilian clothes and fashioned a phony county employee badge walked out of the Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles Tuesday and is still at large, sheriff’s deputies reported.

Randall Chastain, 27, of Ontario was serving a 90-day sentence for grand theft and was due to be released next Wednesday, but “the FBI has been investigating him as a bank robbery suspect,” said Sgt. Bryan Williams.

State prison officials had also placed a hold on Chastain because he had walked away from a minimum-security conservation camp in September. He had been serving a three-year term for possession of bad checks and money orders and receiving stolen property, Williams said. Deputies did not announce the escape for two days and refused to give any details on how Chastain obtained the civilian clothes. Williams said investigators served a search warrant at the Pomona home of a friend of Chastain Thursday where Chastain has stayed in the past but failed to find the fugitive.
