PGA Seniors Tour player Butch Baird and LPGA player Chris Johnson combined for a seven-under-par 64 and a one-shot lead in the opening round of the Mazda Champions team tournament Friday at the Tryall Golf and Beach Club.

Two teams--Arnold Palmer and Colleen Walker, and Miller Barber and Nancy Lopez--were tied at 65.

Baird and Johnson shot bogeyless golf. Baird made five birdies and Johnson two over a course that measures 6,407 yards for the men and 6,296 for the women.

Baird won $249,731 on this year’s senior tour.

“Most everything went our way today,” Baird said. “When I was out of a hole, Chris was right there. We didn’t go out with a number in mind, but we’ll certainly take 64 every day.”

Palmer had one of his best putting rounds of the year. He made five birdies, including two with putts of more than 15 feet.

“I made the birdies, but she (Walker) made the pars that kept the spirit of the team alive,” Palmer said.
