Catcher Carlton Fisk, Almost 40, Signs One-Year Contract With the White Sox
Carlton Fisk, a 16-year major league veteran, has signed a one-year contract with the Chicago White Sox and is listed as the team’s starting catcher for 1988.
“We have satisfied one of our major needs by signing Carlton Fisk,” General Manager Larry Himes said Friday. “I know that Carlton is happy to be back with the White Sox, and the White Sox are happy to have him on board for 1988.”
Fisk, a Chicago area resident who will be 40 next Saturday, had expressed concern a few weeks ago that his contract had not been settled.
Fisk hit .256 with 23 home runs and 71 runs batted in last season for Chicago. In 1987, he became only the third catcher in major league history to reach 300 home runs and 1,000 RBIs in his career.
Playing nine years for the Boston Red Sox and seven for Chicago, he has a .270 batting average with 304 homers and 1,048 RBIs.
