The accused “ski-mask rapist” allegedly attacked an 83-year-old woman the day after Thanksgiving, while police in San Jose had their surveillance of him suspended due to holiday scheduling, police acknowledged. But Sgt. Dwight Messimer defended the handling of the case, saying detectives were too shorthanded to continue normal surveillance during the four-day holiday weekend. News reports have been critical of the department, despite the arrest last week of suspect George A. Sanchez of San Jose. The 26-year-old sewer worker has been charged with 101 felony counts of rape, sexual attack and robbery involving 25 women in the Santa Clara Valley.
