A car-theft suspect who survived a jump Monday from the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge was reported in good condition at a local hospital Tuesday, authorities said.
Leo Travers, 21, whose hometown was unknown, was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center after falling about 170 feet off the bridge while trying to elude San Diego police officers, Police Sgt. Frank Bucheit said.
Travers suffered no internal injuries in the fall, but was suffering from hypothermia, hospital spokeswoman Sheri Smith said.
He is believed to be only the fifth person to survive the jump from the bridge, authorities said.
At 7:10 p.m. Monday, officers observed a parked car near the middle of the bridge’s span and a man walking on its six-inch ledge, Bucheit said.
The officers ran a check on the car’s license plate and found that it had been reported stolen, he said. When police approached Travers to question him, he leaped from the railing, Bucheit added.
The incident is being investigated, and Travers might face auto-theft charges, authorities said.
