All-American Bowl : Secules Helps Lead Virginia Past Brigham Young, 22-16

Scott Secules ran for one touchdown and passed for another as Virginia, in a rare postseason appearance, defeated Brigham Young, 22-16, in the All-American Bowl football game Tuesday night.

Secules scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter to put Virginia ahead, 7-3, and passed 22 yards to John Ford in the final period as Virginia finished its season with an 8-4 record.

BYU, appearing in a bowl for the 10th consecutive year, fell to 9-4 despite a 394-yard passing performance by sophomore Sean Covey.

Virginia won its only other postseason game of this century in 1984, beating Purdue in the Peach Bowl.

Secules’ pass to Ford gave the Cavaliers a 22-9 lead. BYU closed to 22-16 on Covey’s 1-yard pass to Fred Whittingham.

The Cougars held Virginia on its next possession, forced a punt and moved to the Virginia 46. But on fourth and 1, Covey was stopped for no gain.

Virginia’s running game, paced by Kevin Morgan’s 82 yards and Marcus Wilson’s 77, complemented Secules’ passes and kept the Cougar defense off balance.

After BYU’s Leonard Chitty opened the scoring with a 20-yard field goal, Virginia moved to a 14-3 lead on Secules’ run and a 25-yard run by Morgan.

The Cougars responded with an eight-yard scoring run by Whittingham, with the teams trading touchdowns in the final period.

The Virginia victory snapped BYU’s six-game winning streak.
