Crime in Manila

Share

Filipinos are hurt by Mark Fineman’s reference to Manila as “a city notorious for murder and now terrorism” (Part I, Dec. 12). For while the city may have its share of criminality and terrorism, it is far from the level that makes some cities in other parts of the world “notorious.”

Criminal incidents in Manila have decreased over a comparative period last year. Terrorism activities are expected to abate considerably with the arrest of Gregorio Honasan and his men and the surrender of over 8,000 communist rebels and their sympathizers.

Manila today remains a city where one can relish the sight of the most beautiful sunset in the world. Its people are ready to spread the welcome mat for guests who are willing to sample the happy mix of European and Western cultures.
