Hawthorne High School student Viken Saghatian has won a first-place award in the sixth annual high school art exhibition at the USC Helen Lindhurst Fine Arts Gallery. Saghatian’s work is titled “Yoko.” Third-place awards went to Manual Donayie of San Pedro High School for “Rebirth” and to Tim Porter of Lawndale’s Lloyde High School for “Aaron Copland.” Honorable mentions went to Dion James of Hawthorne High and David Criley of Palos Verdes High.

Paul S. Ishizuka has joined San Pedro Peninsula Hospital as vice president of finance. He will oversee business services, accounting and personnel functions for the 438-bed facility.

The Women’s Sailing Assn. of Marina del Rey has named Rolling Hills resident Gail E. Hine as recipient of the Marilyn Butefish Award for her support of women in the sport of sailing. Hine, the first female commodore of the Redondo Beach Yacht Club, was the first woman to be named a director of the Southern California Yachting Assn. She also organized a series of six public seminars that encouraged women to take the helm.

Robert E. Prouty of Rancho Dominguez has been honored for volunteer service by the Los Angeles Chapter, American Red Cross. He received the Spotlight Award for his accomplishments as chairman of the Red Cross Disaster Field Service Center in January, 1986. The center, located in San Pedro, is one of 12 in the United States.

Russ Gagliano, owner of Silver Spur Services, has been elected to a second term as president of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce. Other new board members are Ed Rea Jr., president of Rea’s Hardware, and Dave Hawkins, manager of Home Savings of America, who were elected vice presidents, and Joanne Harrison, manager of Great Western Savings, who was named treasurer. Mary Cooper is executive director.

Mark Lewis of King Harbor Marina took grand prize for best-lighted boat during the King Harbor Assn.’s “Light Up the Harbor” competition. Other first-place winners were Eric Lewis for best use of sound or animation and Lois Peterson for most novel entry. Stephen Brossard won the Judges’ Hospitality Award. Other winners were Lou Andrea, Sandy Overland, William Larson, David Shenk, Guy Spenser, Al Smith, Mary Davis, Gene Colabatietto, Alan Warshaw, David Armstrong and Paul Spittle.

Loyola Marymount University has announced that the Rev. Anthony Brzoska has been named dean of the graduate division and Dr. M. Joanne Fisher of Marina del Rey has been appointed associate dean of summer session, continuing education and special programs.

Carl M. DeLeeuw of Palos Verdes Estates has been elected commander of the China-Burma-India Veterans Assn., a national group with 7,000 members. The group is comprised of civilians and military personnel who served in that theater of war.

Jean Beecher has been named chairwoman of the board of trustees of Torrance Memorial Hospital Medical Center. Beecher became a medical center volunteer in 1970 and has been a member of the hospital board of trustees for the past decade.

Rabbi Steven Silver was recently installed as spiritual leader of Temple Menorah. The installing officer was Rabbi Leonard Thal, regional director of the Union of American Hebrew Congregation, the national organization for reformed Judaism. Silver, 34, is the youngest rabbi to serve as Temple Menorah’s spiritual leader. He and his wife, Cheri Ellowitz Silver, live in Torrance with their three children. Temple Menorah, celebrating its 40th anniversary, is a reform Jewish congregation and was the pioneer Jewish congregation in the South Bay.

Curt Higgins has been elected president of the South Coast Chapter-Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters. He is the owner of Modern Insurance in San Pedro.

Lawrence Brugnatelli has been named associate director of the Switzer Center in Torrance. He is a licensed marriage, family and child counselor and a registered psychological assistant who has supervised clinical services at the center since 1978. Switzer provides education, counseling and therapy for learning disabled and emotionally disturbed children and their families.

Rose Williams, president of the board of directors for the Volunteer Center, has announced the selection of Akrevoe Emmanouilides as new placement coordinator. Emmanouilides of Rolling Hills is active in Greek-American volunteer work and was the first woman president of the parish council of St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church in Redondo Beach.

Billy R. Ware of Ladera Heights has been appointed manager of the western division for Southern California Gas Co. The division, with 530 employees, serves residential, commercial and industrial customers from Malibu to Palos Verdes. Ware began his career at the gas company in 1966, reading meters in the Hollywood area.
