San Diego High Schools : Robinson Scores 20 in Madison Win

Robbie Robinson scored 20 points to lead Madison High School to a 73-72 victory over Poway in the semifinals of the unlimited division of the Kiwanis Tournament at Serra High Wednesday night.

Poway guards Ty Nichols and David Delaney combined for 14 points in the first quarter to give Poway a 25-15 lead. Nichols made two three-pointers in the quarter.

But Madison (7-1) got its running game going and trailed by only one, 43-42, at halftime.

Madison led, 59-58, after the third quarter but built a seven-point lead early in the fourth quarter. Poway came back and trailed by one, 71-70. But Bryant Moore made two free throws to give Madison a 73-70 lead with 40 seconds to play. Poway’s Adam Jones made a layup at the buzzer.

Nichols finished with a game-high 25 points and Delaney had 18 before fouling out. Jeff Harper added 19 points for Madison.

Madison will play Mt. Carmel in the finals at 8 p.m. Saturday. Mt. Carmel, the only team to defeat Madison this season, beat El Capitan, 55-42, in the other semifinal game.

In other Kiwanis Unlimited games:

Point Loma 54, Serra 49--Jeff Johnson scored 18 points, including 4 three-pointers to lead Point Loma. In the game, the Pointers made seven three-pointers. Point Loma led by one, 26-25, at halftime after trailing most of the first half. Point Loma increased its lead to six points in the third quarter and maintained a similar lead through most of the fourth. Serra (3-4) drew within four, 48-44, with three minutes to play, but could get no closer. Jim Griffin scored 15 points for Point Loma. Dexter Springall and Keith Ladue scored 12 points each for Serra, which was eliminated from the tournament.

Southwest 56, Patrick Henry 52--Southwest’s Art Balce made a three-pointer with less than a minute to play to break a 52-52 tie. Balce scored all of his seven points in the fourth quarter when Southwest (7-3) outscored Patrick Henry, 17-6. Patrick Henry (4-2), which led, 46-39, at the end of the third quarter, made only two of six free throws in the fourth. Will Tate scored 21 points for Southwest and Terrence Hamilton had 23 for Patrick Henry.

Hilltop 62, Hoover 52--Mark Dirksen scored 29 points as Hilltop advanced to play Chula Vista. Trailing, 45-28, at the end of the third quarter, Hoover scored 24 points in the fourth quarter. Hilltop led, 22-11, after the first quarter. Darnell Raney and Justin Schmunk scored 17 each for Hoover.

Helix 61, Monte Vista 49--Damon Roach scored 19 points to lead Helix to its second victory over Monte Vista this season. Helix beat Monte Vista, 54-47, in a Grossmont League game. Scott Winne, coming off an ankle injury, scored 15 to lead Monte Vista (4-4). Helix led, 31-25, at halftime and gradually opened a 10-point lead in the third quarter. John Pressler added 11 points for Helix.

Chula Vista 52, Bonita Vista 26--James Shaw 12 and Scott Matney scored 11 for Chula Vista (3-7). Bonita Vista made only 8 of 44 shots (18%) and trailed, 25-11, at halftime.

Morse 56, Mount Miguel 48--Mount Miguel’s Robert Griffith scored 20 points, but Morse’s full-court press took effect in the second half. Mount Miguel committed 26 turnovers in the game. Morse made 6 of 10 free throws and outscored Mount Miguel, 16-10, in the final period.

LIMITED DIVISION

La Jolla 63, Crawford 59, OT--Crawford’s Lamont Grove hit a three-pointer with 18 seconds to play tie the score, 57-57, in the limited semifinals. But La Jolla scored on its first possession in overtime when Adam Kleid stole the ball and fed David Berteaux for a layup. Sean Rodgers scored 22 points and Berteaux added 15 for La Jolla. After not scoring in the first quarter, Grove had a game-high 27 points. La Jolla will play Lincoln, which defeated San Diego in the other semifinal, in the limited final Saturday at 8 at Hoover High.

Valhalla 74, Loara 43--Rafid Kiti, a 6-foot 5-inch guard, scored 20 points and Dan Chase added 16 to Valhalla (5-1). Kiti did not play in the fourth quarter after the game had already been decided. Valhalla led, 34-20, at halftime. Valhalla’s Tony Clark had 15 rebounds.

Castle Park 69, Rancho Buena Vista 68--John Stanton scored 26 points to lead Castle Park. Rancho Buena Vista’s Al Aliipule scored 24 points.

Fallbrook 59, Clairemont 38--Mike West scored 22 points to lead Fallbrook. Clairemont’s David McDavid had 12 points.
