A homemade, single-engine experimental plane crashed Thursday near Otay Lakes Reservoir, killing the pilot, who had taken off minutes before from nearby Brown Field, the sheriff’s department reported.
Killed on impact was Mark Norman Anderson, 36, who lived in the 10600 block of Esmeraldas Drive in San Diego, a sheriff’s spokesman said.
The crash occurred in an old parachute landing site just off the end of Wueste Road, a largely undeveloped area of land, according to authorities.
The plane, which was described as a BD-5 aircraft, was not carrying any passengers. High winds hindered rescue crews.
Investigation into the crash is being handled by the Federal Aviation Administration, the sheriff’s spokesman said .
