120 Gallons of Crude Oil Leak Into Vacant Huntington Field

About 120 gallons of crude oil leaked into a vacant field in Huntington Beach on Saturday, officials said.

Fire and police officials said the spill posed no danger to people, water, wildlife or vegetation. Small amounts of oil spilled into gutters and a storm drain on Pacific Coast Highway before workers sealed off the leak Saturday morning.

Workers for Chevron Oil Co., which owns the ruptured pipeline on a lot between 20th and 21st streets, took several hours to clean the mess and completed the job by early in the afternoon.

A few gallons of the sludge reached the beach because the storm drain empties into the sand, but the oil did not reach the ocean, Huntington Beach Fire Department Capt. George Munsey said.

Officials closed 20th Street between Pacific Coast Highway and Walnut Avenue during the cleanup operation.
