Share

Monica Filer made two free throws with 16 seconds left and Point Loma High School held off Santana in the final seconds, 48-47, to win the girl’s Unlimited Division championship game of the 41st Kiwanis tournament Saturday night at Serra High.

The victory extends Point Loma’s San Diego Section winning streak to 69 games. The state record is 84.

Santana had a couple of opportunities to win in the final seconds but couldn’t score.

Freshman Desiree Weimann, whose two last-second free throws against Mt. Carmel put Santana in the championship game, missed the front end of a one and one with less than 10 seconds remaining. The rebound went out of bounds off a Point Loma player and Santana had one last chance with six seconds. However, the inbounds pass, intended for Leslie Ellis, was intercepted by Point Loma’s Michelle Montanez.
