College Basketball Roundup : Unbeaten Pittsburgh Uses Its Defense to Rout Jacksonville

Pittsburgh’s defense allowed only one two-point field goal in the first half as the third-ranked Panthers defeated Jacksonville, 81-67, in a nationally televised game Saturday night at Jacksonville.

Pitt’s 6-0 start is the school’s best since 1929 when the Panthers won their first 12 games. Jacksonville, which starts three sophomores and a freshman, fell to 4-5 despite a 30-point performance by Troy Mundine.

Rod Brookin came off the bench to score 15 points, and Charles Smith and Demetreus Gore each added 13 for Pitt, which built a 41-19 halftime lead while holding Jacksonville to 25% shooting from the field.

Mundine hit five three-point shots in the first half, but the Dolphins made just one of fifteen two-point shots. Pitt led by as many as 28 points in the second half.

Oregon St. 63, Texas Christian 49--The Beavers opened the second half by outscoring the Horned Frogs, 16-5, to take a 46-27 lead with 11 minutes remaining and went on to win their first-round game in the Far West tournament at Portland.

Forward Earl Martin scored all eight of his points during the spurt. Oregon State’s biggest lead was 59-34 with 6:05 left. The Beavers are 4-3. Tim Chase scored a game-high 19 points for TCU (5-4).
