The State : Woman Killed by CHP Shots

Share

A Palo Alto woman was shot and killed by two California Highway Patrol officers after she drew a gun on them during a vehicle stop near Redwood City, police said. Tovita Amescua, 25, was apparently angry over the arrest of her male companion, David Amaya, on a drunk-driving charge and pointed a loaded .22-caliber revolver at CHP Officer Hugo Olazar, police reported. Olazar hit her with two shots and his partner, Officer Kurt Johnson, also struck her with two shots. Amescua, who fired one errant shot at Olazar, died shortly after arrival at a Redwood City hospital. Amaya, 35, who described himself to police as Amescua’s husband, was released after posting bail for the drunk-driving charge.
