Girls’ Roundup : El Toro Loses First to Edison

Wendy Sandstedt scored 23 points, and Kristen Tanabe added 17 as Edison High handed El Toro its first defeat of the season, 65-52, in the semifinals of the Marina-Edison tournament Tuesday at Marina.

Sandstedt scored seven points during a seven-minute third-quarter stretch in which Edison (10-3) extended a three-point halftime lead to 12 point.

El Toro (12-1), which narrowed the lead to 42-36 at the end of the period, cut it to three early in the fourth quarter before Edison put the game out of reach.

El Toro played without three starters--Elaine Youngs (twisted ankle), Andrea Young (stress fracture of foot) and Kristen Bevis (on vacation). A fourth, Lori Halliday, returned Tuesday from a vacation and came off the bench to score four points.

“We tried the best we could to compensate for their losses, but we just couldn’t do enough tonight,” said El Toro Coach Greg Yeck.

Edison will play Marina (11-2) in tonight’s championship game at 8.

Marina 72, Huntington Beach 40-- Liberty Brewster scored a season high 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Marina.

Marina scored the game’s first eight points and outscored the Oilers, 19-6, in the first quarter.

Dee Dee Stigar had 16 points and 8 rebounds for Marina, and Dawn Charrion had 8 points and 14 rebounds.

Other games--Mater Dei (9-4) defeated Los Alamitos (5-5), 52-32, in its fifth place semifinal game. Mission Viejo (10-3) defeated Fountain Valley (6-6) in overtime, 69-64. In the consolation semifinals, Foothill (5-5) defeated Katella, 51-39, and Loara (7-5) beat Valencia (7-5), 57-55.

In the La Quinta tournament:

La Quinta 58, Valley Christian--Donne Gondringer had 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Aztecs (7-3) to the tournament championship.

Santa Ana Valley 57, Villa Park 34--Francesca Rumps scored 18 points for the Saints, who finished third.

South Torrance 44, El Modena 42--South Torrance won the consolation championship despite a 28-point performance by El Modena’s Ginger Poat.

In the Costa Mesa Tournament:

Capistrano Valley 52, Palos Verdes 35--Shelly Zierhut scored 17 points for the Cougars. Capistrano Valley plays Chino for the championship tonight at 8.

Chino 49, Tustin 28--Deedee Anderson scored eight points for Tillers, who play Palos Verdes for third tonight at 6:20.
