Despite three hours of surgery and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, veterinarians were unable to save a female American bald eagle wounded by a bullet.

Dr. Scott Thomas said the bird died Wednesday from a combination of debilitation, blood loss and infection. Authorities said the eagle, which is protected by federal law, was shot last week by an unknown assailant. The .22-caliber bullet shattered one of its legs.
