Six San Diego County residents were rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter Friday after their boat ran aground during a fishing trip off Baja California.

The 65-foot Fiesta was about 115 miles south of San Diego when it hit some rocks off Cabo Colnet about 4:30 a.m., Coast Guard Lt. Rick Gromlich said. A distress signal was sent before the boat was abandoned and the six swam to the rocks.

Gromlich said the Coast Guard picked up the signal and dispatched a helicopter from San Diego. The six people were located about 7:30 a.m and hoisted off the rocks.

He declined to name the people aboard, saying only that they were friends who were using the boat for a private fishing trip. No injuries were reported. The trip originated at Fisherman’s Landing on Point Loma.

The cause of the accident is under investigation by the Coast Guard’s Marine Safety Office, Gromlich said.
