San Diego High Schools : Lincoln Defeats Santana for Title

Carl Gaines and junior Aaron Wilhite scored 16 points each to lead the Lincoln High School boys’ basketball team to a 68-65 victory over Santana in the championship game of the Santana tournament Saturday night.

Lincoln improved to 12-1, and Santana is 11-1.

Lincoln led, 38-32, at halftime and for much of the second half. But Santana came back to take the lead midway through the fourth quarter.

With a minute and a half left, Joe Temple, the tournament’s most valuable player, tipped in a rebound to make it 68-65.

Santana tried to set up a three-point shot to tie it, but Joe Church was called for traveling when he tried to throw the ball to Tim Barry with 10 seconds left.

Kenny Hawkins added 11 points for Lincoln.

In other Santana tournament games:

West Anchorage 70, Patrick Henry 68--John Fritz made a three-point play with less than a minute left to help West Anchorage defeat Patrick Henry for third place.

Fritz’s basket and free throw put West Anchorage in front, 68-66. Fritz had a game-high 24 points. West Anchorage led, 33-30, at halftime, but Patrick Henry came back to take the lead, 52-49, at the end of the third quarter. Terrence Hamilton scored 20 and John Spence had a season-high 18 for Patrick Henry (7-3).

Clairemont 60, Chula Vista 58--Chula Vista scored as many points, 29, in the fourth quarter as it did in the first three, but it was not enough to win the seventh-place game. Clairemont led by 19 with a minute left in the third quarter, but Chula Vista came back to make it close enough that a three-pointer with 10 seconds left could have won the game. Ray McDavid led Clairemont (3-8) with 25 points, and Lamont Jackson added 20. Chula Vista’s Scott Mattney scored 19.

Briefly: Hilltop 65, Grossmont 61 (fifth place).

MT. CARMEL TOURNAMENT

Oceanside 42, Serra 41--Serra had a chance to win the consolation championship with three seconds left, but Chris Ireland missed the front end of a one-and-one, and three tips by Serra players also were off target. Serra (4-6) led, 34-39, at the end of the third quarter, but 4-for-10 free throw shooting and poor defense gave Oceanside a chance. Alvin McGee scored 16 for Oceanside. Keith Ladue led Serra with 12 points.

Mt. Carmel 93, Ramona 70--Eric Olander scored 28 points to help Mt. Carmel win a consolation game. After trailing, 69-45, Ramona cut the lead to 10 points early in the fourth quarter, but Mt. Carmel then reinserted its starters. Jason Mann scored 22 points for Mt. Carmel.
