Error-Prone Toros Lose It at the Foul Line, 83-75

You couldn’t blame Cal State Dominguez Hills for being in a foul mood.

Dominguez Hills’ four-game basketball winning streak came to an abrupt halt here Saturday against Grand Canyon College as the Toros were unable to overcome early foul trouble and fell, 83-75.

Dominguez Hills (6-5) took its only lead of the game at 16-15 as Anthony Blackmon scored 12 of his career-high 26 points in the first 8 minutes, 30 seconds of the game. However, forward Roger Coleman and guard Derrick Clark both picked up three fouls in the first 10 minutes, and Grand Canyon took an 11-point lead with the aid of free throws.

Grand Canyon shot 8 for 10 from the foul line in the half, while the Toros didn’t attempt any free throws, and the host team held a 44-36 lead at half time. Grand Canyon’s surge was led by Rodney Johns, who scored 12 of his team-high 19 points in the first half, including two three-pointers to shoot down the Toros’ early lead.

Dominguez Hills made several runs at Grand Canyon in the second half. Blackmon started out quickly, scoring six points in three minutes of the second period as the Toros cut the lead to 48-44.

Grand Canyon rebuilt a nine-point lead, 61-52, with 12:32 left but Dominguez Hills tied the game at 63-all on Robert Barksdale’s layup with nine minutes left.

Grand Canyon answered with a three-point play and five free throws. Dominguez Hills was never able to get closer than four points again.

Overall, Dominguez Hills made 34 of 60 field goal attempts but lost it at the foul line, where Grand Canyon hit 24-of-34 to only 6-of-6 for the visitors.

Blackmon added 11 rebounds, and Barksdale finished with 16 points. But Clark and Coleman managed only seven shots between them and were not factors due to foul trouble.

Women

Loyola Marymount 67, Colorado State 56--Loyola Marymount ran its record to 9-3 at home. Freshman guards Lynn Flanagan and Kristen Bruich led the attack with 20 and 15 points, and the Lions took advantage of 30 fouls called against the visitors.

While three Colorado State players fouled out, Loyola shot 27 for 37 from the free throw line. Flanagan was 8 for 8. Colorado State, 6-4, was led by center Jodi Robers’ 16 points.
