Miami Wins Award for Finishing No. 1
The Football Writers Assn. of America Saturday named Miami the winner of the 35th annual Grantland Rice Award as the top college football team in the country.
Miami beat Oklahoma, 20-14, Friday night in the Orange Bowl to complete a 12-0 season.
It was the second time Miami had won the award with a victory in the Orange Bowl. The 1983 team, with Bernie Kosar at quarterback, defeated Nebraska, 31-30.
Saturday, Miami fullback Melvin Bratton underwent successful surgery to repair ligaments in his left knee torn during Friday night’s game.
There is no prognosis yet on how long Bratton will remain hospitalized, a school spokesman said.
