Defensive coordinator Larry Marmie of Arizona State...
Defensive coordinator Larry Marmie of Arizona State reportedly has emerged as the leading candidate to become the Sun Devils’ football coach and could be named within days, according to school sources.
Athletic Director Charles Harris said that Marmie and Jim Colletto, the Sun Devils’ offensive coordinator, both were interviewed last Sunday by a screening committee seeking a replacement for John Cooper.
Cooper resigned last Thursday to accept the coaching job at Ohio State after three seasons at Arizona State.
Marmie, 45, has no previous head-coaching experience. Colletto, 43, was head coach at Cal State Fullerton from 1975-79 and had a 19-36-1 record.
Marmie has Cooper’s and many of the players’ endorsements, plus unanimous support of the Sun Angel Foundation, the school’s booster group.
