Local News in Brief : Orange : Police Say Man Sped, Fled, Rammed Cruisers
A 42-year-old man was arrested early Tuesday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after he rammed police cars that were chasing him, authorities said.
Robert Sandstrom of Orange was spotted driving more than 80 m.p.h. south on Tustin Avenue near Chapman Avenue at 2:40 a.m. when a police officer began pursuit, Orange Police Detective Robert Johnson said.
When an officer attempted to stop him, Sandstrom twice tried to ram the pursuing patrol car with his pickup truck, Johnson said. When two other police cruisers joined in the pursuit, Sandstrom rammed one of them and sideswiped another, Johnson said.
Eventually, police cornered Sandstrom in a cul-de-sac in the 800 block of South Cedarwood Street, where he locked himself inside his pickup truck, Johnson said. Police broke the truck’s window to reach Sandstrom and arrested him.
