A California man was beaten in a Haitian jail after being arrested New Year’s Eve for carrying a handgun, a lawyer said Friday.

Joseph Dent, 31, of Sacramento, was not seriously injured, according to Leslie Alerte, who said he would represent Dent at a Circuit Court hearing today.

Haitian authorities have not commented on the case.

A U.S. Embassy spokesman said: “A consular officer has spoken with him several times, but we can’t reveal anything that has been revealed to us.”
