A single-engine airplane landed safely in a field of newly planted Christmas trees after losing power shortly after takeoff Saturday from the Ventura County airport, authorities said.

A pilot and passenger aboard the World War II trainer walked away unscathed from the emergency wheels-up landing at 3:09 p.m., said fire Battalion Chief Henry Lenhart. The pilot and passenger were not identified.

“They were taking off from the airport, heading west and were up about 100 feet when the pilot said they lost power,” Lenhart said. “They were real lucky. Other than the damage to the plane and a few trees, that was it.”

The plane slid about 25 feet through Christmas trees that were about 18 inches high, Lenhart said.
