Lamar, Perry Pace Aztecs Past Pomona

Stephanie Lamar scored 20 points and Chana Perry added 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead the San Diego State women’s basketball team to a 76-50 nonconference victory over Cal Poly Pomona Tuesday night in Peterson Gym. The victory stretches the Aztecs’ winning streak to nine games.

SDSU (11-2) was never challenged by its NCAA Division II opponent. Jessica Haynes added 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Aztecs.

Pomona (11-3) was led by Cathy Gooden’s 13 points.

Shannon Anderson scored 23 points and Laura Mars added 15 to lead Point Loma Nazarene College to a 71-64 victory over Azusa Pacific in the Golden State Athletic Conference opener for both teams at Point Loma.

Point Loma (10-4) was never challenged after leading, 38-29, at the half.

Tina Ray paced Azusa Pacific (6-4) with 15 points.

Vicki Evans scored 22 points and Kris Vatch added 14 to lead New Mexico State to a 78-67 victory over United States International University at the Jewish Community Center in La Jolla.

Evans’ layup with 11:01 left in the first half gave New Mexico State (12-2) a 16-14 lead. It never trailed after that, opening a 40-28 lead by halftime.

Sonya Carter paced USIU (8-6) with 26 points.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Senior center Bill DesRochers scored 33 points to lead Azusa Pacific to a 85-65 victory over host Point Loma Nazarene College in the Golden State Athletic Conference opener for both teams. The victory snapped a nine-game losing streak for Azusa Pacific.

Point Loma shot 34% (26 of 76) from the field. Azusa Pacific (3-13) shot 71% (36 of 51).
