San Diego High Schools : Springall’s Late Free Throws Help Serra Beat La Jolla

Dexter Springall hit two free throws with 2:05 left in the game to put Serra High School ahead for good Tuesday en route to a 56-51 nonleague boys’ basketball victory over La Jolla at Serra.

Serra took its first lead, 46-44, with 6:40 left when Keith Ladue sank two free throws.

Springall and Ladue each scored 12 points for Serra (6-6). Sean Rodgers led La Jolla with 21 points.

In other nonleague action:

San Diego 70, Clairemont 57--Clairemont led by one point after each of the first three periods, but 15 offensive rebounds enabled San Diego to take control in the final period. Mike Miller led San Diego with 17 points. Ray McDavid scored 22 points and Lamont Jackson added 16 to lead Clairemont (4-8).

Mission Bay 60, San Clemente 45--Steve Grebing had 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead Mission Bay (5-10) at San Clemente.

Briefly--Madison 87, St. Augustine 72. Patrick Henry 68, Hoover 50.

GROSSMONT LEAGUE

Valhalla 114, El Cajon Valley 63--Host Valhalla opened a 30-9 lead and was never challenged. Rafid Kiti scored 26 points to lead six Valhalla players in double figures. Tony Clark and Nate Dickey each scored 14, Rob Tubman scored 11, and Carlos Estrella and Dan Chase each added 10 for Valhalla (8-4, 6-0). Jim Gordon led El Cajon Valley with 18 points.

Monte Vista 73, El Capitan 64--Scott Winne scored 30 points and James Fraser added 10 steals to lead host Monte Vista (7-5, 4-2). El Capitan suffered 27 turnovers and forced only 10 Monte Vista turnovers. Jason Berkshire led El Capitan with 19 points.

Santana 76, Grossmont 65--Tim Barry scored 28 points to lead host Santana (12-1, 6-0). Grossmont fell to 8-6, 3-3.

GIRLS

GROSSMONT LEAGUE

Monte Vista 72, El Capitan 53--Melissa Smith had 31 points, including two three-pointers, 7 assists and 5 steals, to lead host Monte Vista (9-5, 4-2). Danise Myers added 16 points and 8 rebounds for Monte Vista.

PALOMAR LEAGUE

Vista 64, Torrey Pines 38--Chris Enger had 30 points, 18 rebounds and 8 blocked shots to lead defending league-champion Vista (11-4, 3-0) at Torrey Pines. Torrey Pines fell to 7-6, 0-3.

NONLEAGUE

Crawford 69, University of San Diego High School 68--Terri Butler sank a free throw with 13 seconds left to lift Crawford. Butler, a senior guard, scored 38 points. Casandra Tex added 12 points and 9 rebounds for Crawford (5-7).
