Share

Simi Valley center Don MacLean was held to 11 points through three quarters Friday against Royal, but the 6-10 senior scored 14 points in the fourth to finish with 25.

In his 68 high school games, MacLean has scored at least 20 points 54 times, including 35 of his past 38 games.

He is also on track to break Simi Valley’s season scoring record of 714 points set by guard Scott Simcik in 1977-78. MacLean has 523 points this season. At his current pace MacLean, who already owns the school career scoring record with 1,858, will break the mark Jan. 29 against Newbury Park.

Scoring: Newbury Park has lost six consecutive games, but excluding its 44-point loss to Simi Valley, the Panthers have been defeated by an average margin of five points in that span. That includes a 14-point loss to Ventura, the No. 2-ranked team (Simi Valley is ranked first) in the Southern Section 4-A Division. . . . Thousand Oaks’ next six games--all Marmonte League contests--are on the road. The Lancers are the only Southern Section 4-A team with such a string.

Oak Park missed 9 of 10 free throws, including the front end of five one-and-one attempts, in a 56-39 loss to Santa Ynez. The Eagles are shooting 56.6% from the line (146 of 258 attempts). . . . Since scoring a season-low 10 points against Royal, Jon Drezner of Calabasas has averaged 31.5 points in his past six games. He has scored 399 of Calabasas’ 936 points, or 42.6% of the team’s output.

Records: Canoga Park’s 88-53 Northwest Valley League win over Monroe on Friday was surprising considering the Hunters’ performance to date. The win was the Hunters’ first over a varsity squad this season. Canoga Park’s only previous victory was a 93-92 overtime win over Hamilton’s junior varsity. In addition, Canoga Park (2-9, 1-0) has lost six games by 25 or more points.

School records: St. Genevieve’s Mike Cassidy and Mike Walker set school single-game records in the Valiants’ 85-49 victory over La Salle on Saturday. Cassidy had 20 assists and Walker had 20 rebounds. In three games last week, Cassidy had 34 assists and Walker had 37 rebounds.

Girls: Nichole Victoria scored 27 points in Camarillo’s 52-49 Marmonte League victory over Channel Islands on Friday. The 5-5 sophomore guard is averaging a team-high 19.5 points a game. Center Angie Long is averaging 15.8 points and 13.9 rebounds a game for the Scorpions (7-3, 2-0 in league play).

Alemany’s Nikki Davis is averaging 15 points a game and is shooting 50% from the field to lead the Indians to an 11-3 start and four consecutive wins. Michelle Paul is the team’s leading rebounder, averaging 12 a game. . . . Before losing its Foothill League opener to Alhambra, 51-34, Friday, Burroughs was averaging 56.8 points a game, compared to 32.5 for its opponents. The Indians are shooting 40.7% but just 45.1% from the free-throw line.
