Turkey production in 1987 grew to a record 240.3 million birds and is headed up further this year, the Agriculture Department said. Last year’s production was up 16% from 1986, the department’s Agricultural Statistics Board said in an annual report. Six states accounted for more than two-thirds of the nation’s turkey output in 1987: North Carolina, 48.4 million; Minnesota, 40.5 million; California, 25.5 million; Arkansas, 18 million; Virginia, 16.2 million, and Missouri, 15.5 million. Turkey growers in the 20 major producing states intend to boost production this year by about 8%, the report said. Those states accounted for 96% of the ’87 output.
