Gregg Takes SMU Job; Horner Joins Cardinals

Forrest Gregg vowed Thursday to rebuild his alma mater’s shattered football program, leaving the Green Bay Packers and taking a $200,000 pay cut to accept the head coaching job at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
Gregg, 54, the captain of SMU’s 1955 team, signed a four-year contract for an estimated $100,000 yearly base salary. SMU has an option for a fifth year. Gregg had a year remaining on a five-year contract with Green Bay worth $300,000 a season.
He warned overzealous alumni to stay clear of his program, promising to “smack ‘em right in the mouth” if they got SMU in trouble with the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. again. “We’re ready to put the past behind us,” Gregg said.
He predicted that he would have SMU back in the Cotton Bowl in less than a decade.
