Damage Closes San Diego Zoo
Associated Press
SAN DIEGO —
For the first time in its 72-year history, the San Diego Zoo didn’t open as scheduled today because high winds had toppled a dozen towering trees and threatened to fell others or drop dangling branches. A dozen eucalyptus trees, some 100 feet tall, fell over walls into exhibit areas for zebra, bongo, antelope, rhinoceros and tapir, zoo spokesman Jeff Jouett said. No animals were injured during the storm and there was little chance any could escape by using the trees as bridges since the animals are confined in locked holding areas, Jouett said.
