In five grueling sets today, Wimbledon champion Pat Cash blasted his way past top-seeded Ivan Lendl into the finals of the $1.9-million Australian Open tennis tournament where he will meet Mats Wilander on Sunday for the men’s singles title.

The fourth-seeded Australian upset Lendl 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 in a semifinal match that lasted three hours, 56 minutes. Earlier, Wilander ousted defending champion Stefan Edberg in a match-up of Swedes, 6-0, 6-7, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. (Story, Part III, Page 4.) Cash’s victory buried his reputation as a player who can only win on grass courts. “All these people keep telling me I can’t play on hard courts,” he said. “I wonder what they think now.”
