Short-Order Award
Cher called Bob Mackie the other day to suggest a fashion feat. First, the easy part. “She wants a slinky, black velvet dress,” the designer says. But she wants it for Saturday night’s Golden Globe Awards. “It’s a last-minute thing . . . she wasn’t going to go,” Mackie says. (Cher’s been nominated for her role in “Moonstruck.”) He can’t exactly describe the dress yet. It’s still under construction. Mackie also says he and his partner, Ray Aghayan, have just been named costumers for this year’s Oscar Awards show. They’ll design clothes for the opening number and for a medley of nominated songs. “Beyond that, I don’t know what else to tell you until they plan the program,” he says. Fateful Attraction
Glenn Close went to Paris to pick up her Golden Globe outfit, at Nino Cerruti’s showroom. For the fateful award program, where she might win best-actress award for “Fatal Attraction,” Close chose a long, sweeping black cashmere coat, a black jersey top and wide-leg pants. Cerruti also sent out a package to Kathleen Turner recently. It was a boxful of clothes to wear on a promotional tour for “Julia, Julia,” her new movie. Listen hears from Mary Hall Ross of Cerruti that Turner’s goodies included a red tuxedo suit, cashmere pants and a bomber-style jacket and several tailored suits.
It’s Miss Super-America
She’s allowed to work only four hours a day as Miss America, but Kaye Lani Rae Rafko certainly makes the most of her time. In town earlier this week--on the first leg of a promotional tour--she wowed the crowd at the downtown California Apparel Mart with her stamina. Karen Witynski, the mart’s public relations director, tells Listen that Rafko made the rounds of at least 30 showrooms, gave the introduction to a fashion show honoring the Made in U.S.A. Council and appeared at the end in a knockout sequin bustier dress by After Five. She also autographed more than 300 photos, “standing in high heels the whole time,” reports Witynski. Rafko told everyone that she plans to return to nursing when her year’s reign is over. And she gave the lowdown on the crown. It’s made of rhinestones.
No. 2 With a Bullet
Rocker David Lee Roth’s last hit song was his remake of the Beach Boys’ classic, “California Girls.” But Billy Sheehan’s last hit was his purple leather jacket. Sheehan played lead guitar for Roth until a month or so ago, when he went off on his own. First stop on the independence trail was a call to Clifford Olson leathers on Sunset Boulevard. Sheehan wanted something “funky but slick,” Olson says. “So I made him a jacket that looks like it had a cannonball shot through the back of it.” Actually the blowout is backed by more leather. Olson explains, “He asked for a planned wild look so that’s what we did.”
Love Socks
Who loves ya, baby? Eric Smith, that’s who. It says so on a new design from the originator of the bulky slouch sock. Smith’s latest creation is a thin, stand-up model printed with all the continents on the globe. Gold letters at the top tell the story: “World Love.” And on the sole of the sock (where else?) are the words: “Love, Eric.” The price for all this good will is a mere $10 a pair. An Eyelash Away
Listen spied Liza Minnelli the other day window shopping her way through Sunset Plaza. She was dressed in disguise--no false eyelashes. What would Tammy Faye say?
