Winds gusting up to 80 m.p.h. in Southern California Friday tore down power lines, sent trees crashing onto parked cars, blew windows into homes and flipped big-rig trucks on their sides.

“It’s a big mess--in capital letters,” said one Highway Patrol dispatcher.

The worst damage seemed to be centered in San Bernardino and Riverside counties, where police and sheriffs were deluged with calls from concerned property owners, some of whom reported windows blown into their homes, said Ontario police Lt. Wayne Hurte.

There were no immediate reports of any serious injuries.

Highway Patrol Lt. Donald Pitt said highway traffic along Interstates 10 and 15 was moving very slowly.
