Red Sox Invite Tallest Player to Training Camp

BOSTON —
Free agent pitcher Mike Smithson, who at 6 feet 8 inches is the tallest player in the major leagues, has been invited to attend the Boston Red Sox training camp next month.
Smithson, 32, was signed to an AAA contract with Pawtucket of the International League, Red Sox general manager Lou Gorman said. The five-year major league veteran spent six years in the Boston organization before he was traded to Texas in April, 1982, for John Henry Johnson.
