Pacific 10 Roundup : Washington State Holds Off Oregon State for 56-49 Win
Brian Wright scored 11 of his game-high 17 points in the second half to lead Washington State to a 56-49 Pacific 10 Conference victory over Oregon State Saturday at Pullman, Wash.
Washington State improved to 7-7 overall and 4-3 in the conference. The Beavers fell to 9-6 and 3-3.
The Cougars made seven of eight free throws in the final two minutes to preserve the victory.
“We couldn’t hit a shot and then all of a sudden we made the second mistake of making three or four unnecessary fouls,” Beaver Coach Ralph Miller said.
Cougar Coach Kelvin Sampson said: “The key to that ballgame was we never let them take the lead. They got right up to it, but we never let them have it. You’ve got to give us credit for hanging in there.”
Stanford 70, California 54--Howard Wright scored 18 points and Greg Butler added 14 to lead the Cardinal to a 70-54 victory over the Bears at Stanford.
Wright hit a field goal and two free throws, and Terry Taylor made two three-pointers in the first four minutes of the second half to help Stanford (12-6, 4-3) outscore the Golden Bears, 12-2, and take a 46-28 lead.
Roy Fisher led Cal (5-10, 2-5) with 18 points.
