Michigan Coach Bill Frieder knew he had to find a special advantage in order to beat Indiana Sunday.

“We changed our offense,” Frieder said after the No. 7-ranked Wolverines ended the Hoosiers’ 29-game home winning streak with a 72-60 victory at Bloomington, Ind.

“When Bobby Knight has a week to prepare, you know he’s going to know all of your plays by name,” Frieder said. “So we changed our entire offense. That’s hard to do in one or two days.

“When it works, you’re a good coach, and when it doesn’t work, you’re a jerk. This is a big, big victory. We’re happy for it.”

Guard Rumeal Robinson scored 17 points, including 11 straight in the second half, to key the rally that lifted the Wolverines to their 14th victory in 16 games and their fifth Big Ten win against one defeat.

Indiana, the defending national champion, dropped to 9-6 and 1-4.

Robinson, a 6-foot-2 sophomore guard, opened the second half with a three-pointer that gave the Wolverines a 38-30 lead. Indiana’s Joe Hillman countered with a layup, but then Robinson hit a pair of free throws, two layins and a fast-break stuff to put Michigan up 46-32 with 15:20 left in the game.

Michigan built its lead to 20 points, 57-37, on a Gary Grant jumper with 10:30 remaining following an additional 11-5 run in which Grant scored 7 and Glen Rice 4 of his game-high 21.

Indiana, relying on free throws and Dean Garrett’s inside play, could close the gap only to 11 points, 60-49, on two Garrett free throws with 6:19 remaining. The Hoosiers never got closer.

North Carolina 77, North Carolina State 73--J.R. Reid, playing with four fouls, managed to score 17 points, and the No. 2 Tar Heels survived a Wolfpack rally to win the Atlantic Coast Conference game at Raleigh, N.C.

Charles Shackleford scored a game-high 26 points for the 20th-ranked Wolfpack (10-4 and 2-2).

Georgetown 69, Syracuse 68--Charlie Smith hit an off-balance, one-handed scoop shot as time expired to give the Hoyas an upset win over the No. 14 Orangemen in a Big East game at Syracuse.

Georgetown is 12-4 and 2-3; Syracuse 13-5 and 3-3.

Syracuse had gone ahead, 68-67, with nine seconds left on a driving jumper by Sherman Douglas. Smith then went all the way, driving the lane for the game-winning shot.

“It was a crazy shot, but he’s consistent with it,” said teammate Mark Tillmon. “Once I saw the ball in Smitty’s hands, I saw him look at the clock. I pretty much knew what he was going to do. That’s his shot.”

The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for Georgetown, which erased a nine-point deficit in the final seven minutes.

The Huskies trailed by 10 points in the first half and 4 at halftime but, sparked by the shooting of Recassner, Hayward and Mark West, surged ahead after halftime.
