After weeks of speculation, it has finally been confirmed: The weather will be near-perfect for Super Bowl XXII.

“While Sunday will be a little bit below the normal, there will be very ideal conditions for a football game,” said Wilbur Shigehara, chief forecaster with the National Weather Service.

The weather on Sunday is expected to be partly cloudy, with temperatures about 65 degrees.

Shigehara said that the weather conditions for Sunday’s big game can be credited to the disappearance of the high-pressure system that produced the hurricane-force Santa Ana winds that ripped through San Diego last Thursday and Friday.

“Santa Ana temperatures have peaked. As the winds are forced down, the temperature will warm up, and we will receive a warm sea breeze,” he said. “There will be a gradual cooling trend until Sunday with the temperatures dropping 3 to 5 degrees each day.”

Although rain is expected to fall in the state during the weekend, it will be confined to the mountain areas and central California. “The storm will be 1,200 miles away from San Diego,” Shigehara said.
