Becker Struggles but Beats Lendl Again
Boris Becker struggled for 2 hours 40 minutes Thursday before beating Ivan Lendl, 7-6, 6-4, for his second victory in two days over the world’s No. 1-ranked tennis player.
Competing in a four-player tournament, Lendl, of Czechoslovakia, broke Becker’s serve in the sixth game, but the West German, ranked fifth in the world, broke back in the seventh, and the set went to a tiebreaker.
In the second set, Becker served six aces and broke serve in the seventh game.
Becker defeated Lendl, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2, Wednesday at Osaka.
Steffi Graf of West Germany, who won the Australian Open last Sunday, needed less than one hour to down Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina, 6-2, 6-1.
