Top-seeded Patty Fendick defeated Sara Gomer of Britain, 6-3, 7-6, in the final of a $50,000 international women’s tennis tournament at Auckland, New Zealand.
Fendick, a two-time NCAA champion at Stanford, used a simple delaying tactic to throw the lanky Briton off stride while she was trailing 0-2 in the second-set tiebreaker.
Gomer overcame a 2-5 deficit in the second set to force the tiebreaker.
But Fendick’s delaying tactic--she later claimed the sun hat did need adjusting--put Gomer off stride, and the seventh-seeded Briton conceded the next five points.
