Couple Killed in East County Crash
A Santee couple were killed Sunday night when their car rammed into the rear of a tractor-trailer rig on Interstate 8 in Alpine, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Richard Sandvik, 42, and his wife, Kun Koo, 45, were headed west at about 65 m.p.h. when the accident occurred, the CHP said. The truck, driven by Paul L. Shortz of North Carolina, was going 35 m.p.h.
The Sandviks and Mrs. Sandvik’s 14-year-old son, Robert Rhodes, had to be extricated from the van.
The Sandviks were pronounced dead at the scene, one mile west of Tavern Road, at 11:45 p.m. Rhodes, who was asleep in the rear of the van when the accident occurred, suffered a leg injury.
Shortz escaped injury, the CHP said.
