Gaines was named assistant athletic director for marketing and promotions after he resigned as basketball coach at the end of the 1986-87 season.

After a 6-21 record in his first season in 1979-80, Gaines guided SDSU to five straight winning seasons, including a National Invitation Tournament appearance in 1982 and an NCAA tournament berth in 1985.
