Gaines Quits Administrative Post
Smokey Gaines, former San Diego State basketball coach, resigned Monday from his position as assistant athletic director, said Fred Miller, SDSU athletic director.

After a 6-21 record in his first season in 1979-80, Gaines guided SDSU to five straight winning seasons, including a National Invitation Tournament appearance in 1982 and an NCAA tournament berth in 1985.
