The 257-ton roof of the Hoosier Dome ripped and collapsed after a night of rain, showering the stadium’s artificial turf with water but causing no apparent major damage.
The dome was reinflated about three hours after the 5:30 a.m. collapse. The eight-acre, $6.1-million glass fiber roof is supported by a cushion of pressurized air forced into the stadium by fans and is held in place by about two miles of steel cables.
The Indianapolis News said the weight of rainwater that had accumulated overnight apparently caused a 40-foot-long rip in the fabric.
