Local News in Brief : 5 Held in 2 Robberies
Domino’s Pizza deliverymen, already concerned about the critical wounding of a pizza clerk during an attempted robbery, encountered five robbery suspects in two separate incidents, police said Wednesday.
The five men were arrested in Inglewood and South Los Angeles, and police were still searching for leads in the Monday night shooting of Celso Salgado, 20. Salgado was in critical condition Wednesday at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center with gunshot wounds to his arm and abdomen.
In the wake of Salgado’s shooting, worried Domino’s employees called sheriff’s deputies shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday when a suspicious-sounding telephone caller ordered several pizzas to be delivered to a site of earlier robberies, Deputy Dave Pacheco said. Deputies trailed the clerk to a home in an unincorporated county area near Inglewood and arrested three men when they surrounded him, Pacheco said.
In a separate incident, two brothers were arrested early Wednesday in Altadena on suspicion of armed robbery after they allegedly threatened a Domino’s Pizza deliveryman with a baseball bat and took about $20.
The incidents are similar to a rash of local robberies in late 1985 when more than 20 Domino’s Pizza delivery clerks were attacked.
