The State : 2 Die, 2 Survive Boat Sinking

Share

Two men survived the sinking of their fishing boat by clinging to a hatch in the cold water off the Farallon Islands for seven hours, the Coast Guard said. Two others were missing and presumed dead. The Lisa Lorrain of Half Moon Bay took on water while crew members were sleeping and rapidly began sinking. Three men managed to escape from the boat but, the Coast Guard said, a fourth, Keith Young, 31, the captain, apparently never got out of the hull. The three men clung to a floating hatch, but during the ordeal a man identified as Greg Hayes lost consciousness, let go of the hatch and disappeared. The survivors, James Chew, 22, of San Diego, and Grant Coles, 22, of Moss Beach were later spotted by a fishing boat.
