Share

Fourteen football players from San Diego County community colleges have committed to Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. schools, making it the biggest beneficiary of local talent.

In all, 26 players from area colleges have committed to NCAA Division I schools. Three players will attend Pacific 10 schools, and two will play in the Western Athletic Conference.

Scott Walker, a first-team All-Southern California linebacker from San Diego Mesa College, was the most sought-after player in the county this season. Walker, who went to Helix High School, will attend Arizona State.

Ron Young, a wide receiver from San Diego Mesa who caught 44 passes for 648 yards and 7 touchdowns, decided on Washington State this week. Young, who played at Patrick Henry, chose Washington State over Wyoming. Also going to the Pac-10 is Curt Dykes, a second-team All-Southern California offensive guard from Palomar College. Dykes, from Orange Glen, will attend Oregon.

Steve Daley, a defensive end from San Diego Mesa, will attend New Mexico, and defensive back George Dozier is headed for Wyoming. Daley is from Kearny and Sweetwater.

San Jose State of the PCAA signed players from all five local community colleges.

Eight players have decided on San Jose State, led by wide receiver Jim Courtney of San Diego Mesa and quarterback Mike Jordan of Grossmont, both honorable mention All-Southern California selections.

Jordan, from Mountain Empire, also was a first-team All-Mission Conference quarterback and completed 132 of 290 passes for 2,105 yards and 15 touchdowns. Courtney, from Kearny, was tied for fourth in the state in receiving with 58 catches for 812 yards and 7 touchdowns.

San Diego Mesa’s Jeff Sturch, who set a national community college passing mark for career completions with 401, had earlier committed to Stephen F. Austin, an NCAA Division I-AA school in Nacogdoches, Tex.
